I Got Paid To Sleep!

Never did I think I would get paid to go to sleep, but there I was, 7 months pregnant and newly appointed Sleep Executive for Sonno. I was thrilled to hear the news, because I was ready to squeeze in as much rest as I could before my baby arrived. And so the timing couldn’t have been better. To be honest, I had only ever seen Sonno in ads on Instagram, Facebook and also in my brother’s bedroom when I lived at home with Mum. The mattresses looked firm and the ads boasted amazing support and shape just for your body. Prior to this, a mattress had always been a mattress to me. The softer the better, for me. Until I started packing on the baby weight, then my back told me otherwise.

Sonno gave me the opportunity to be brutally honest with the mattress. So here is my take home.

Day 1 — First Impressions:

When Ryan unrolled the mattress (because its shipped in a really clever compact manner, rolled and stuck into a cuboid cardboard box), I touched it and I thought to myself, this probably won’t be soft enough for me, I was skeptical. I was already thinking, maybe I can ask my colleagues if they could send over a mattress protector to pad it a little—but then what would be the point of analysing the mattress?

We dressed the bed and boy, the bed linens they have. It’s like running freshly shaved legs on your cold sheets, but your legs don’t have to be shaved, and your sheets don’t have to be cold… ALL THE TIME. To top it all off, the Sonno pillows were not as daunting as they looked (squarish and firm—guess you could say I’ve just never liked firm bedding). They have these bubble textures on them that Ryan likes to feel, which ultimately ended up in him calling it the “Feel-low”.

And then it was sleep time. Ryan, my baby bump and I. Lying on my side (as I should, as a pregnant lady), I felt my body slowly melting into the mattress (and the COLD sheets), relieving my legs off the weight it had been carrying all day.

The next morning I rose, surprised that a mattress stiffer from what I’m used to actually relieved me some of back stress. They do mention, it takes a while to break in, but night 1 was already looking promising. If that was what it felt like day 1, I felt as though I couldn’t wait to see what it would be like when it DID break in.

Day 7 — One Week Together:

The mattress was totally starting to melt around me and my baby bump. I also started noticing some sleeping habit changes. I was tossing less before slipping into slumber (which was huge because I’m usually very restless before I sleep—especially since I got pregnant and wasn’t used to having this big balloon in front of me). The pregnancy backaches were gone, even without Ryan supplementing my back with some light massages before sleep. I’m guessing that the fact my tossing and turning was reduced, it brought down my chances of having a tired and sore back the next morning.

The other thing that helped my posture as I sleep on my side was the Sonno Bolster. It supported my belly (a little high at first—but as it broke in it got to the right spot) so that it didn’t feel as thought my back was holding up a sack of potatoes when I slept on my side.

Day 25 — 1 Month Anniversary:

We found ourselves hanging out a lot more in bed, just to chat and spend time together before baby arrived. It was a good place for me to prop my self up and get off my feet because my pregnancy weight was getting A LOT for my back.

Ryan also started snoring more than usual (read: sleeping very well), cos I’m guessing the Sonno Mattress was also working for him too. He was sleeping so well that even when I’d shake him to stop (which he usually does), he didn’t. I was glad to see him get the rest he deserves and while some nights it keeps me up, I’m glad it wasn’t my back that was keeping up.

Also, they really mean it when they say give it 25 days to break in. I thought the mattress wouldn’t be able to keep up with my rapidly changing body (talk about a skeptical Executive haha). But wow did it all prove me wrong. When I did have to change positions, turning from side to side was a lot easier than my super soft bed because of the steadiness of this one. It gave my feet good support to lock into and turn.

Day 100 — New Boss On The Block:

Now, I know I’m the Sleep Executive, but I have a boss now, and her name is Jolieyah Aari Ryan, my newborn baby girl. And she gets the main say of the mattress. Safe to say I think she enjoys it.

When she wakes up in the middle of the night for a feed, while Daddy Ryan gets her bottle ready, I put her on our bed and watch her chill. She’s too tiny to be making the memory foam work, I reckon, but she seems to enjoy being on the big human mattress. The cool sheets are probably keeping her nice and cool on our hot Malaysian nights (well, I hope so! She can’t quite talk yet!)

And after we put her down, there’s nothing better than Mummy & Daddy falling asleep ourselves in the comfort of our Sonno Mattress.

I promised the team I’d be brutally honest with the reviews—after all, they hired me to do this program so that you can read it here first! And I have to say, out of all the reviews I’ve done, this was the one in my—ahem—comfort zone. This 100 Day journey has been a smooth and comfy one! I’ve never in my life been asked to sleep on the job, so I really don’t know how any other jobs will top this one!

I hope this 100 Day Sonno breakdown gave you guys an insight on my journey with Sonno. Especially as a heavily pregnant woman with lots of DIFFERENT kinds of discomfort. I’m glad Sonno was with me throughout the second half of my third trimester. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop a comment below! I’m STILL the Sleep Executive for now… or who knows… maybe my contract will be renewed hehe.
